The Sultan said, “I am pleased to inform you that the royal mining company, Zinari, will enter an agreement with the country of France regarding gold and uranium extraction. Therefore, I think we should send Imam Hammad and Omar to review the agreement.
“Here at home, we also have a meeting about how to expand the camel trade we conduct with foreign countries. There is a need to introduce new methods to increase their care and manage their movement. I plan to attend this meeting myself, along with Imam Asad and Zahradeen.”
Tafawa Maleek interjected, “Sir Jalaludeen, don’t you feel any responsibility? You speak your personal desires and ambitions openly in front of everyone.”
Everyone looked up at Tafawa.
“You want to send your son for the gold and uranium agreement, and at the same time involve our children in the camel trade?”
Abdoulou Matawalle said, “Tafawa, you should be careful about what you’re saying. You are speaking to the Sultan.”
“I am not speaking to you, I am addressing my brother,” Tafawa replied, stopping Matawalle.
The Sultan smiled and said, “Tafawa, there is nothing for you to accuse me of. Hammad is indeed my son, and in my position, all children are treated equally.”
“That’s not equal. Why didn’t you send Zahradeen as well, a man who is not in full health?”
Imam Zahradeen said, “Honorable Tafawa, Imam Hammad and I are equal. I only went to represent the Agadez kingdom; there was nothing more to it.”
“Be silent! Do you even have the audacity to speak when I am addressing your father? I am tired of this distinction you insist on showing. You seem determined to push your son into the Sultan’s position by force, even though he is not qualified. He lacks full mental health, and look at his fingers—they bear no sign of capability. He has been married for years without heirs. How do you think a blind man can lead one with sight? How can a man who cannot stand on his own feet be said to represent a kingdom like Agadez in trade affairs?”
