We were walking with Hanee, not even looking back, and when it became far, we even started running just so we could see that fat girl. We did not stop until we reached the gate of a very beautiful house that, when you saw it, you would know it belonged to someone of status. At the gate, the girl stopped with her ash-coloured Range Rover. She honked, but nothing; the gate was not opened. After about two minutes she honked again, but still the gate man did not open the gate for her.

In anger she got out of the car, leaving her bag behind and leaving the car open, and went into the house. When she entered, she found the gate man lying down shivering with cold, showing that he was unwell. She did not even look at how he was feeling; she raised her hand and slapped him hard. He held his cheeks as hot tears fell from his eyes, and before he could recover she slapped him again. Only then did she say, “Who is your father that I honked for you twice and you still couldn’t open the gate for me? And you know that according to my habit I only honk once, even if you are praying you must stop and come open the gate for me to enter the house. Tchh, useless fool!”

She left, and did not go back to the car she had left outside. She walked a long distance before she reached their compound. She went in directly without even greeting. She found Momy lying down while someone was massaging her feet. She fell into her arms, trying to catch her breath. Alarmed, Momy sat up and said, “What happened to you, my youngest? I’m seeing you as if you are out of your mind?”

The beautiful young lady said, “Momy, who brought that fool to our house?”

Momy said, “Who is that?”

In a spoiled tone she said, “That gate man over there.”

Momy said, “Ah! You mean Baba Faruku? Daddy himself brought him. He said he pitied him. What did he do to you, my youngest?”

“Momy, I honked three times and he refused to open the gate. I even left the car outside with the key still in it; I didn’t remove it because I was so angry.”

Momy stood up and said, “Youngest! Are you out of your mind? Didn’t you fear it would be stolen? You know it was brought yesterday, and the other one too, the one you left there was stolen from you at the wedding house.”

As if waiting for Momy to finish speaking, she burst into tears and said, “Momy! Today you are scolding me and even pointing your finger at me? Momy, since I was born you have never done this to me because of that useless old gate man? Then let me go where he is; by Allah, he must leave this house today, no matter who stands for him.”

She went out without even wearing a head covering, and she did not even look for shoes before heading to the gate man’s room. She found him still shivering, worse than the way she had left him earlier. Without waiting for anything, she entered his room, pulled him out, and threw him outside. She looked beside his mattress and saw a small Ghana must go bag. She picked it up and threw it at him as Momy arrived there. She came out of the room and said, “Because of you, Momy scolded me and even pointed at me with her finger. By Allah, today you must leave this house, you useless old man. You want to make my life hard? Go back to the village and continue eating dawa millet porridge, tchh!” She clicked her tongue and left the place.

What angered her was that Momy could not say anything to her. When she had gone a little far, with great difficulty the old gate man said, “SAFNA!!! You have humiliated me like this? You call me useless old man? Although I don’t blame you; it is my own fault for lowering myself and serving in your house, hmmm!! That is what it means to seek lawful provision. Insha Allah, just as I sought it from you and you humiliated me, after I have raised you, I pray to Allah to bring a day when you too will seek me out....” He finished speaking in tears and painful sorrow.

Quickly she came back to him and slapped him again, saying, “Not amen, old NAJADU!! Allah is greater than you, and I will never seek you out. My father has money that even after his death I will still eat from it and even give it as charity to beggars like you.” She spat on the ground and said, “Ugh! With your ugly beginning.”

She left the place running because of the anger in her heart.

Momy did not say anything; she only followed after her daughter and left the gate man wiping his tears. After about two minutes he carried his Ghana must go bag and went out.

He walked slowly because he was feeling a very high fever. With difficulty he managed to get to the station and boarded the bus to his village, BAGARUWA. He used the little change he had to pay the fare and arrived.

He found Nawwaf sitting at the front of the house, resting his chin on his hands. When he saw his father, he immediately stood up and went to him, took the bag, and they went inside while he welcomed him home.
