The girl quickly widened her eyes, staring at the man’s face, looking extremely frightened.

In his clear but weakened voice, strained by pain, he said,

“Hide me, please! They want to kill me!”

Just then, someone banged on their door. The door shook violently as if it might break.

She quickly turned around, looking everywhere in panic. She was completely confused and didn’t know what to do.

If she refused to help him and he was killed, she knew she would also share in the sin of a fellow Muslim being murdered. But if she helped him, she was certain those people would kill her too.

Not knowing what else to do, she looked at him again and then hurried toward her room.

“Come,” she said.

He quickly followed her, nervously glancing around.

She opened the wardrobe her mother had bought for her. There was barely anything inside it.

Turning back to him she said,

“Get inside. I will hide you here.”

He nodded and quickly stepped inside.

She shut the wardrobe door just as several young men—whose number only Allah knew—stormed into their living room.

Her body began to tremble as she heard them approaching her room. She didn’t want them to enter because they might discover him.

Suddenly she pulled off her hijab and threw it on the floor.

From the small crack in the wardrobe, the man inside watched her.

She reached behind her dress and slowly began pulling down the zipper.

His heart started pounding.

“What is this girl trying to do?” he wondered.

As the zipper moved down, he noticed a large dark birthmark on the right side of her shoulder.

At that exact moment, the men lifted the curtain covering her doorway.

She immediately screamed loudly and crouched down quickly, shouting,

“Mamaaa!”

The man who was leading them pushed the curtain aside and shouted in a rough voice,

“Get back, you fools! Can’t you see the girl is trying to change her clothes?”
